Beamline Scientist

Context & Job description

You will lead the design, construction, operation and further development of the future EBS beamline for coherence applications.

Coherent scattering techniques, such as X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Coherent Diffraction Imaging and Ptychography, will dramatically benefit from the enhanced coherence of the Extremely Brilliant Source (ESRF-EBS) upgrade, and therefore will improve their capabilities for both high resolution imaging and dynamics. Among the four flagship beamlines in its EBS science programme, ESRF aims to build a cutting-edge beamline for coherence applications. Coupling a unique instrument, to the availability of intense coherent X-rays will allow the development of novel techniques to yield quantitative, high-resolution information for both structural and dynamics studies.

As a Beamline Scientist, your mission includes:

  • Managing the project for the construction of a world-leading coherence beamline
  • Providing scientific and technical leadership for innovative programmes on X-ray coherence applications
  • Fostering and expanding user and in-house scientific activities

Expected profile

  • PhD and several years of postdoctoral experience in physics, biology, geology or a related discipline
  • Relevant synchrotron research experience in at least one high resolution Coherent scattering technique, such as X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Coherent Diffraction Imaging and Ptychography is essential.
  • A background in data processing or analysis will be considered an asset
  • Good communication abilities are essential to integrate into a multidisciplinary and international research team. Project management skills will be an asset.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
