Postdoctoral Fellows in the Structural Biology Group

Context & Job description

You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, and in the operation of the beamline, including providing support to external users as local contact.

The ESRF Structural Biology (SB) Group currently operates 8 end-stations for Structural Biology providing a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities for experiments in macromolecular crystallography (MX), BioSAXS and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Additional ancillary techniques such as in crystallo spectroscopy and experiments based on high pressure cryo-cooling are also provided for, as is a laboratory for protein expression and purification. A major activity for the group is the development of new experimental methodology and of integrated software for the automation of our beamlines.

Commensurate with the re-commissioning of our beamlines following the construction of the ESRF Extremely Brilliant Source (http://www.esrf.fr/Apache_files/Upgrade/ESRF-orange-book.pdf; http://www.esrf.fr/about/upgrade) we invite applications for post-doctoral researchers (3-year, fixed term positions) in the following areas:

  • Development of millisecond spectroscopy for time-resolved experiments.
  • Data analysis for synchrotron serial crystallography (SSX) experiments
  • Automation of image analysis pipelines for cryo-electron microscopy.
  • Development of new methodologies for fast sample delivery in SSX experiments
  • Cryo-electron microscopy, particularly the single particle reconstruction of macromolecular complexes.
  • Development of microfluidic devices for the use in bioSAXS experiments

Further information may be obtained from Gordon Leonard (email: leonard@esrf.fr).

These positions are open until filled.

Expected profile

  • PhD in Structural Biology or a closely related area, obtained less than 3 years ago.
  • A strong interest in the use of synchrotron radiation in the study of biology is desirable.
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

Working conditions

We offer a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your quality of life and your installation in the Grenoble area when relocation is needed.

The monthly salary may be complemented by additional allowances upon eligibility (expatriation allowance, etc...).
