Project title: Aerospace aluminium alloy composition and damage evolution during processing

You will join ID16B’s team at the ESRF. ID16B is a hard X-ray nanoprobe beamline dedicated to X-ray nano-analysis consisting of the combination of different 2D/3D X-ray imaging techniques for a wide range of scientific disciplines from earth and environmental science to life science and materials science.

The aim of the PhD project is to determine the relationship between thermo-mechanical loading paths and pores evolution, in aerospace aluminum alloys, using a multi-scale approach coupling high-resolution ultrasound technique, neutron tomography and in situ X-ray nanotomography. The project is motivated by the need of Constellium (CTEC) to optimize their processes using multiscale characterization and modelling of hot rolled plate.

You will have to learn the industrial process to produce samples that you will characterize at the micro-scale at the SIMAP laboratory as well as at the NEXT D50 beamline of the ILL (neutron tomography) and at the nano-scale at the ID16B beamline. A large part of the work will consist in developing all the aspects relative to the acquisition and cross-requirements between the various characterizations and perform post-processing analysis on acquired data. This multi-scale approach will provide a feedback to the modelling of the rolling for the various alloys investigated.

Expected profile

  • Degree allowing enrollment for a PhD (such as MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent) in physics, materials science, chemistry or closely related science
  • A background in experimentation is desirable, and knowledge of program languages will be an asset.
  • Interest in mechanical and material modelling is appreciated.
  • Manual skills and rigorous attention to detail are essential in this work environment
  • Proficiency in English  (A proof of upper-intermediate level would be advantageous and can be provided in the application. Applicants originating from native-English-speaking countries can apply without the need for proof of level. An official degree conducted in English will be also accepted as a proof; Students without proof upper-intermediate level may still apply and their level of English will be checked during the interview.)
  • Compliance with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule: candidates may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than twelve months in the three years immediately before the date of recruitment.
  • At the date of recruitment, early-stage researchers must be in the first four years of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.

Working conditions

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school of  Université Grenoble Alpes and based full-time at the ESRF and ILL (Grenoble, France), other than a 3-month secondment at (Constellium CTEC- Grenoble area). Additional visits totaling no more than 3 months may be made to the (SIMAP-Université Grenoble Alpes) when needed. Furthermore, a varied pedagogical training program will be offered to the successful candidate throughout the 3-year PhD project.
