Postdoctoral fellow on ID29, the serial and time-resolved macromolecular crystallography beamline

Context & Job description

As part of the Extremely Brilliant Source facility upgrade (https://www.esrf.eu/about/upgrade), the ESRF has constructed a new beamline for serial and time-resolved macromolecular crystallography (TR-     SSX) experiments at room temperature. The new ID29 beamline delivers an unprecedented flux density, allowing the recording of diffraction data from micron-sized samples in a few microseconds, and is equipped with a next generation diffractometer and a Jungfrau detector. Beamline operations are supported by a dedicated sample preparation laboratory where the most suitable crystal delivery systems such as injectors, fixed targets and microfluidic devices will be prepared and characterised prior to experiments. In addition, a dedicated instrument, the TR-icOS (time-resolved in crystallo optical spectroscopy) setup has been specifically developed to help characterize time delays and titrate laser pump energy in pump-probe diffraction experiments occurring on ID29.

The postdoctoral position available will focus on developing novel data collection methods for TR-SSX and TR-icOS, and characterise radiation effects at high X-ray or visible photon flux densities. The selected candidate will also take part in the development and the commissioning of the new ID29, performing state-of-the art experiments at the new end-station.

As for all post-doctoral researchers in the Structural Biology Group, the successful candidate will participate in in-house research programmes, will contribute to the operation of beamlines and will provide support to external users as local contact.

Expected profile

  • PhD in chemistry, physics, biophysics, biology or closely related science obtained less than 3 years ago
  • A strong background in X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy and serial crystallography is desirable
  • A strong interest in new method development
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

 

Working conditions

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 or 18-month period.
