Post-doctoral Fellow in chemistry for the ID24 and BM23 XAFS beamlines

Context & Job description

BM23 and ID24 are two beamlines of the ESRF dedicated to the X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). BM23 is a general-purpose energy scanning XAS beamline installed on a two-pole wiggler ID24 is an undulator beamline with two branches: an energy dispersive branch (ID24-ED) and a scanning branch (ID24-DCM). The beamlines cover a wide range of applications in chemistry, solid-state physics, materials science, biology, environmental science, geochemistry, geophysics and planetology.

Chemistry and materials science are among the prioritized research directions at BM23 and ID24. You are expected to work in these fields, conducting research, providing user support and developing the relevant capabilities of the beamlines.

As a postdoctoral fellow at BM23 and ID24, you will:

  • Participate in ongoing in-house research program in the field of chemistry and catalysis at BM23 and ID24
  • Develop your own research program in collaboration with your academic and/or industrial contacts
  • Support the external users as a local contact
  • Help to ensure continuous operation of BM23, ID24 and supporting chemistry labs
  • Contribute to enhancing the performance of BM23 and ID24 in the field of chemistry (designing new instrumentation, adapting complementary analytical techniques, developing new software, etc)

Further information can be obtained from Olivier Mathon (+33 438 88 25 61, e-mail: mathon@esrf.fr) or Kirill Lomachenko (tel: +33 438 88 19 14, e-mail: lomachenko@esrf.fr)

Expected profile

  • PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics or closely related field obtained less than three years ago
  • Strong background in chemistry (preferably catalysis or electrochemistry)
  • Good Knowledge of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
  • At least, basic programming skills
  • Ability to productively interact with multi-disciplinary international staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
  • Experience with in situ catalytic or electrochemical experiments at synchrotrons is desirable
  • Good Python programming skills would be an advantage
  • Experience with infrared spectroscopy, X-ray emission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction is desirable
