Insertion Device and Magnet Engineer

Context & Job description

The Insertion Device and Magnet group (IDM) is responsible for the design, assembly, characterization and operation of undulator X-ray sources and magnets in the accelerator complex of the ESRF. The team, composed of 11 engineers and technicians, has developed a large experience in the production and measurement of complex magnetic systems. 

As Engineer in IDM you will have a strong background in applied physics and very good skills in programming and instrumentation.

Your main duties will include:

  • Design of magnetic field sources and the computation of the emitted X-rays radiation, and contribution to the development of new undulator sources
  • Development of the IDM lab instruments and methods
  • Follow-up of assembly and characterization of undulators and accelerator magnets
  • Participation in the operation of the operation of the accelerators and in the service to the User

Expected profile

  • You should hold a Master Degree (300 ECTS),
  • A strong background in applied physics and electromagnetics is mandatory
  • Very good programming skills in Python and C/C++ are required
  • Experience in instrumentation, magnetic measurements and/or permanent magnet systems
  • Experience with undulators, magnets and accelerator complex
  • Ability to lead construction and development projects
  • Curiosity and motivation to acquire new knowledge in various fields and to deepen your skills
  • Very good communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Working conditions

Participation in shift work and callable duty according to the ESRF regulations

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
