Detector technician

Context & Job description

The Detector & Electronics Group in the Instrumentation Services and Development Division provides development and support capabilities in the fields of X-ray detectors and control electronics required for experimental stations and the accelerator complex. 

In a team of 17 engineers and technicians, you will participate in the operation, maintenance, production and development of X-ray detectors for synchrotron radiation beams. You will assist the engineers of the group who will ensure your technical supervision, and you will interact strongly with other staff from different technical teams such as mechanics, electronics and software, as well as technical and scientific staff at the beamlines.

Your missions will be the following:

  • Provide technical and operational support for measurement instruments managed by the Detector Unit
  • Carry out repairs on simple and complex X-ray detectors
  • Contribute to the production of X-ray detectors, including follow-up and verification of internal or external manufacturing
  • Perform physical characterization of sensors
  • Test and evaluate different types of instruments used in the Detector Unit, including the analysis of test results
  • Design, build or modify X-ray detectors from the design phase (mechanics, electronics) up to their integration in a mechanical housing
  • Participate in the development of new X-ray detectors

Expected profile

  • You should hold a Technical/Academic degree (BTS, DUT, Bachelor or equivalent diploma worth at least 120 ECTS) in instrumentation, physical measurements, technical engineering or electrotechnics
  • A previous professional experience as engineer assistant or equivalent.
  • Good general understanding of physical measurements techniques and instrumentation
  • Basic skills in CAD, ideally with Solidworks and/or Altium for mechanical and electronic circuit designs
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Aptitude for team work
  • Well-organized, meticulous and methodical approach to the work
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Working conditions

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
