Building Maintenance and Handling Operator

Context & Job description

The Buildings & Infrastructure Group is responsible for maintaining and developing the ESRF site and its technical infrastructure. This includes providing expert analysis and diagnostics, and collaborating with other divisions on new projects. As part of the B&I Group, the Building and Maintenance Operation Unit is responsible for:

  • Providing services for handling and moving, cleaning of buildings, physical preparation of events, servicing cars and managing keys.
  • Overseeing landscaping and snow removal contracts, road maintenance and waste contracts.
  • Managing building maintenance tasks for doors, roofs, civil works as well as rain and wastewater networks and the fire hydrants networks.
  • Coordinating mandatory inspections on handling equipment and vehicles.

The unit is looking for a skilled operator proficient in handling overhead cranes, slinging operation and driving forklifts.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Participation in logistics operations such as transporting materials, managing waste skips and providing support for events as needed.
  • Maintaining and inspecting lifting and handling equipment, such as forklifts, overhead cranes, tackle, hoists, and slings.
  • Contributing to annual mandatory equipment inspections and updating the Computerized Management Maintenance Software (CMMS) Carlsource

  • Participating in various duties aimed at continuous maintenance of on-site buildings and areas.

Extreme vigilance is required for compliance with safety rules, in particular for all handling operations.

It is essential to stay thorough and up-to-date with technical advancements. You should also have a strong sense of responsibility and a practical mindset, helping you stay organized and methodical in your work.

Expected profile

  • Logistics or metal works “CAP” or “Baccalauréat Professionnel”, or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in handling operations using overhead cranes.
  • Proficiency in driving forklifts (cat. 2-3-4) and operating overhead cranes (up to 6.3 tons).
  • Ability to sling heavy loads safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of French and basic proficiency in professional English (working language at the ESRF) are required.
  • Familiarity with WORD and EXCEL software, and experience with CMMS software CarlSource or similar is preferred.

  • Autonomy, versatility and flexibility in work approach.
  • Capable of operating effectively in challenging working conditions, including meeting deadlines, adhering to safety procedures and performing delicate handling operations in the presence of the scientists who own the equipment.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Work well in a team environment with the ability to collaborate effectively in diverse and multidisciplinary teams.

Working conditions

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
