Linux Systems Administrator Engineer

Context & Job description

The TID/Information Technology Services (ITS) at the ESRF provides advanced computing resources and services that are essential to supporting our scientific missions.

The LINUX Unit is responsible for user support, defining technical solutions and managing computing resources, data storage and archiving. The main challenge is to validate and implement state-of-the-art data management solutions, while maintaining a very high level of availability and IT-security standards.

We are currently seeking a passionate engineer, willing to develop their skills in a highly challenging technical environment. The ideal candidate should be service oriented, have solid experience in open-source solutions and demonstrate a strong interest in the latest technologies.

The purpose of this mission is to implement the necessary developments required within the context of the OSCARS EU funded project:

  • During the 6 initial months of the mission you will familiarise with the ESRF IT infrastructure, by collaborating with the Linux team on maintenance storage and compute support.
  • Implement a data push service, that allows ESRF users to automate the transfer of data from the ESRF repository to their home infrastructure as soon as the data is produced.
  • Implement a mechanism to automate the transfer of scientific data, based on DOI (persistent identifier) metadata.
  • Improve our VM based environment for scientific analysis by enabling access to Slurm based HPC resources. Improve significantly the latency of the remote desktop interface of this environment by integrating advanced remote desktop solutions.
  • Integrate the EOSC AAI federation into our identity infrastructure.

To successfully complete this mission, you should have in-depth experience in several of the following areas:

  • Linux Systems administration.
  • Service deployment and management.
  • Virtualization and container scalable infrastructures.
  • High Performance Computing infrastructure.
  • Storage management (IBM Storage scale, CEPH …) and associated protocols such as NFS and SMB.
  • System and infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Technical documentation and projects reporting.

Expected profile

  • Higher university degree (Master or equivalent 300 ECTS diploma) in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • Ideally 2 years of professional experience as a Linux systems administrator, however, beginners are invited to apply.
  • Strong analytical ability, problem-solving skills.
  • Good relational skills, teamwork spirit and service-oriented attitude.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies

Working conditions

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
