Windows Engineer

Context & Job description

The IT Services Group (ITS) plays a crucial role in supporting the European Synchrotron’s scientific mission, delivering essential computing resources and services to the organization.

Within ITS, the Windows Unit manages over 2,000 workstations and laptops, along with site-wide printers and video conferencing tools. To strengthen our dynamic team, we are seeking a motivated and skilled Windows Engineer to ensure the seamless operation of our Windows infrastructure and contribute to innovative IT solutions.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage the Windows server infrastructure, including Active Directory and GPOs, virtualisation (Hyper-V), clusters, storage and print services, and other related technologies.
  • Ensure Windows systems administration activities in close collaboration with your team. This encompasses computers hardware and software installation, backups, updates and patches.
  • Implement and maintain robust security measures to protect the organization's data and systems from unauthorized access, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations (e.g. GDPR, NIS2) and organisational policies.
  • Regularly monitor system performance, disk space, and logs to ensure secure and optimal system operation.
  • Develop and maintain scripts using PowerShell or other automation tools to streamline system administration tasks, improve efficiency, and reduce manual errors.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to users on Windows-based systems, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and resolving complex technical problems.
  • Lead and manage IT projects from initial specifications and prototyping to testing and deployment.
  • Collaborate with other technical teams and scientists to provide services and technical support that meet the needs of the ESRF and especially its scientific activities.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and purchase office to ensure procurement and project success.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation.

Expected profile

  • Technical Skills:
    • Master’s degree or equivalent (300 ECTS) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
    • Solid expertise in Windows technologies, including Workstation, Server, and Cloud environments.
    • Ideally a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with Windows systems. Newly graduated students with relevant experience as trainee are encouraged to apply.

 

  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent communication skills combined with a strong service-oriented mindset.
    • A collaborative team player with a proactive and adaptable attitude.
    • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
    • Fluency in English, working language at ESRF.

Working conditions

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
