X-ray Optics engineer (F/M)

Context & Job description

You will join a team of around 12 engineers and technicians in the X-ray Optics Group, in charge of the design, manufacture, quality control, commissioning and development of X-ray optical components for the ESRF’s experimental stations (beamlines).

As an X-ray optics specialist, your missions will be the following:

  • Characterisation of the quality of the X-ray beam after optical elements such as focusing optics or monochromators, via at-wavelength wavefront measurements or other means.
  • Analysis of aberrations and wavefront perturbations introduced to the beam by X-ray optical elements
  • Involvement in the beamline and optical system design process including the simulation of beamline and optics performance by wavefront propagation or ray-tracing methods
  • Propose wavefront tailoring optics to adapt or improve the X-ray beam quality and specify their design parameters
  • Organize the fabrication of wavefront tailoring optics, follow up procurement and their implementation on beamlines (optomechanics, alignment)
  • Improve in-house focusing optics fabrication technologies and participate in the development of new types of X-ray optics.

Alongside these missions, you will participate in the general operational and development tasks of the X-ray optics group.
You will publish, document and disseminate the results of your activities.

Expected profile

  • Master's degree in Physics or Optical Engineering, with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in X-ray science or X-ray optics.
  • A PhD in a related field is an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of focusing x-ray optics is essential.
  • Strong skills in X-ray optical simulations using both ray tracing codes and wavefront simulation tools.
  • Solid background in the measurement and quantification of wavefront errors.
  • Proficient in Python programming.
  • Hands-on experience with the operation of X-ray beamlines and the measurement of optical performance.
  • Ability to quickly understand scientific requirements.
  • Comfortable working closely with multi-disciplinary teams and facility users in an international research environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a strong aptitude for teamwork.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

Working conditions
