Postdoctoral Fellow - Nano Beam Diffraction Imaging Techniques (ID01)

Context & Job description

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is looking for a motivated post doc to join ID01, a world leading beamline dedicated to micro-/nano-beam diffraction imaging experiments. The beamline team has worked in collaboration with numerous experts from the user community on the development of new tools exploiting the ESRF unique beam coherence and brilliance.  For the study of epitaxial systems, nanostructures and devices the team has successfully carried out lighthouse experiments that attract collaborators and users worldwide. The successful applicant will support the user program and develop their own field of research typically in the area of Nanobeam diffraction imaging eventually combined to reconstruction algorithms in order to improve todays’ performance. The beamline team is supported and completed by numerous visiting scientists and PhD students that collaborate on a basis of external grants and collaborations with research institutes across Europe.

As a post doc at ID01, you will:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research and exploit and drive ID01’s  (operando) nano diffraction imaging program. In this field you will develop your own in-house research project in consultation with your supervisor.
  • Drive technical developments, ensuring continuous upgrades and improvements of the beamline instrumentation/ algorithm base.
  • Collaborate with international experts, working closely with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Present and publish your research findings in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.

Expected profile

Educational Qualifications

  • PhD in a STEM field and several years of postdoctoral experience in physics, chemistry, or another closely related field.

Required Skillset

  • Experience with X-ray diffraction, X-ray optics, or related experimental techniques would be desirable.A strong background in scientific programming would be an important asset.
  • Ambition to develop and lead research projects, from proposal to publication, favouring and encouraging collaborative work.
  • Ability to prioritize and communicate efficiently in a fast paced environment of a large scale user facility.
  • Ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate activities with internal and external colleagues.
