Post-doctoral research fellow in Geosciences (m/f) in the Structure of Materials Group (BM18)

Context & Job description

About 40% of the ESRF’s beamlines are involved in Geosciences. They take full benefit from the exceptional beam properties offered by the ESRF-EBS, currently the only high-energy 4th generation source worldwide. We are currently seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on multiresolution X-ray uCT and 4D X-ray uCT at the imaging beamlines BM18 and BM05. Subjects range from polar sea ice to volcanic lavas passing by fluid flow through experiments related to earthquakes, rock compression, carbon storage, hydrogen production, sustainable industrial practice, and low carbon production. The imaging techniques used at BM05 and BM18 are of the most advanced, automatised and stable, it includes multiresolution from hundred of microns resolution down to a third of a micron as well as various sample environments for in-situ scanning from low to high temperatures and pressures up to 5 km depth. Soon, dedicated devices for long-term recurrent scans of samples during slow dynamic processes will be added to this portfolio.

You will be encouraged to develop your in-house research projects to publish scientific articles. You will also provide support to external users in geosciences and be involved in the daily life of the beamlines.

Expected profile

  • PhD in Geosciences, Geophysics, Materials Science, Engineering, or Physics obtained less than 3 years ago
  • The ambition to develop your own research, from conception of experiments up to publications
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users, coordinate activities with internal and external colleagues, and work as part of a team
  • Local contact support for users during beamtime (including, to some extent nights and weekends)
  • Experience with X-ray imaging techniques (radiography and micro-CT)
  • Hands-on with a strong dedication to experimental work and instrumentation
  • Experience at a research infrastructure facility and/or in other synchrotron techniques or similar would be a bonus
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
  • Good coding skills is desirable
