Measurement technician for mechatronic systems

Context & Job description

Within the Mechanical Engineering Group of the Instrumentation Services and Development Division (ISDD), the Advanced Analysis and Precision Unit provides support and expertise in modelling and measurements. You will join the Precision Dynamics and Mechatronics team which focuses on mechatronics developments, together with analysis and measurement of high precision instruments and vibration measurements.

As a member of this team, you will provide expertise and assistance to ESRF technical and scientific staff in terms of high-precision positioning systems and will contribute to in-house instrumentation developments and the characterisation of mechatronics solutions. You will work in close relation with mechanical, control, electronics, optical and software engineers.

Your main tasks will be the following:

  • Perform high-precision measurements on precision positioning systems, with diverse tools and its specific software : dial gauges, micrometres, interferometer, autocollimators etc.
  • Follow-up and/or achieve acceptance tests (factory or site acceptance tests)
  • Use computing tools for data analysis
  • Prepare systems and measurement devices : configuration, calibration, debugging.
  • Advise about improvements to implement on systems
  • Provide assistance for the assembly and testing of integrated instrumentation as well as their installation and commissioning on the beamlines
  • Maintain a database of measurement data and produce reports

Expected profile

Education

  • You should hold a technical diploma (BSc, Licence, HND, HNC, BTS, DUT, Bachelor or equivalent) worth at least 120/180 ECTS in physical measurements

Technical skills

  • At least 3 years’ experience in dimensional metrology and/or the measurement of positioning system precision
  • Strong interest for high precision mechanical systems, including mechatronics or robotics
  • Confirmed skills in physical measurements are required. In addition, the following skills and qualities are required:
    • Know how to operate a complete measurement chain
    • Good understanding of the physical parameters measured in order to be able to detect failures
    • Data processing using computing tools

Non-technical skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and team-spirit, with ability to work in diverse and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Autonomy, good organization skills and methodical approach to work.
  • Ablility to produce synthetic written reports.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in both French and English. English is the working language at the ESRF

Working conditions

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
