Vacuum Mechanical Technician F/M

Context & Job description

As a technician in the Radio Frequency group, you will work on vacuum and high-power components. This covers a frequency range from 352 MHz to 5.7 GHz which are used or planned for use in the ESRF accelerator complex.

You will take part in the maintenance, repair, operation, and upgrade of the vacuum system, including the design and implementation of both existing and new RF installations. As some RF components use sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas, you will receive full training and support to obtain the required certification.

Your tasks will include:

  • Ensuring that the procedures and equipment used for vacuum interventions are appropriate 
  • Monitoring and maintaining vacuum equipment 
  • Implementing and carrying out repairs technology of the vacuum components and performing them
  • Performing performance analyzes in order to optimize them
  • Assembling and testing vacuum chambers according to precise specifications
  • Cleaning and preparing components for exposure to vacuum
  • Collaborating with teams for installation and providing technical support
  • Documenting your work
  • Participation in RF system operation and standby

As a member of the Accelerator and Source Division, you will be required to contribute up to 15% of your time to the operation of the accelerator complex as part of shift work for service to the Users.

Expected profile

  • Technical degree in mechanical engineering or metrology (BTS, DUT, Techniker, or equivalent) with at least 120 ECTS credits

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in vacuum technology: pumping techniques, baking, pressure measurements, leak detection, and mass spectrometry

  • Skills in instrumentation and physical measurements (temperature, flow rate, pressure, etc.)

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, mechanics, and materials

  • Basic electrical knowledge

  • TIG welding skills are an asset

  • Good computer skills including standard office software

  • Willingness to learn and train on vacuum and UHV systems

  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively with international scientific and technical staff

  • English is the working language at ESRF

Working conditions

This position implies shift work and on-call duty.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
