Post-doctoral fellow (f/m) on ID23-2 in the Structure of Biology group

Context & Job description

Serial Synchrotron Crystallography is now a standard tool for structural biology at ESRF. It has applications at both room temperature and cryogenic temperatures with and without time resolution. Although significant progress has been made in experimental design, sample delivery, data collection strategies and data analysis, challenges remain. One such challenge is the de-segregation of mixed populations of structural data. The origin of this diversity could be due to a number of phenomena, including, but not limited to, radiation damage, (de)hydration and incomplete penetration of ligands or light.

This postdoctoral position will be focused on applying previously developed machine learning techniques to single image serial experiments. Application and refinement of these approaches will be applied to both in house data as well as data collected by external research groups at the ESRF. As for all post-doctoral researchers in the Structural Biology Group, you will participate in in-house research programmes, will contribute to the operation of the beamline and will provide support to external users as local contact. You will also have the opportunity to develop your own research programme.

For further information, please contact Dr. Montserrat Soler-Lopez (montserrat.soler-lopez@esrf.fr) or Dr. Max Nanao (max.nanao@esrf.fr)

Expected profile

  • PhD in biophysics, biology or closely related science obtained less than 3 years ago
  • A strong background in structural biology and protein production is desirable
  • Knowledge of macromolecular X-ray crystallographic analysis
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
  • Basic scripting/python knowledge

Working conditions

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
