Post-doctoral fellow (f/m) on ID12 in the X-ray Spectroscopy group

Context & Job description

The successful candidate will contribute to in-house research activities, the operation and upgrade of the beamline, providing support to external users as local contact, and develop an independent research programme aligned with the scientific scope of the beamline and the ESRF research strategy.

The postdoctoral fellow will join the team responsible for the operation and continuous development of the ESRF beamline ID12, a world leading facility for studying magnetic and electronic properties of matter using advanced chiroptical techniques in the hard X-ray range. Combining element-selective X-ray circular dichroism with high magnetic fields and low temperatures, ID12 is at the forefront of efforts to uncover the microscopic links between magnetism and chirality - a rapidly evolving and highly interdisciplinary research frontier. Current developments include a polarization-dependent X-ray excited optical luminescence spectrometer, enabling simultaneous visible and X-ray dichroism measurements under identical conditions. The position offers the opportunity to work at the cutting-edge synchrotron science, contribute to the design and implementation of novel instrumentation, and collaborate closely with a vibrant international user community at the forefront of physics and chemistry research.

Further information may be obtained from Andrei Rogalev (tel.: +33 (0)4 76 88 21 32; email: rogalev@esrf.fr).

Expected profile

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, or materials science obtained less than 3 years ago
  • A strong background in magnetism is required, previous experience in X-ray spectroscopy is an asset
  • Experience in synchrotron radiation instrumentation is an advantage
  • Team player and ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Working conditions

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18-month period.
