Automation Software Engineer F/M

Context & Job description

Power-to-X (PtX) technologies, including hydrogen production, are expected to address key challenges of the green transition that current electricity generation and storage methods cannot easily solve. In the coming years, these technologies are poised to become a major industrial sector and a critical enabler of a carbon-neutral society.

The ESRF plays a key role in the routine characterization of materials for Power-to-X (PtX) technologies.

As part of a group of 50 engineers, you will participate in a project focusing on the automation of data acquisition and data processing for rapid characterization of samples.

You will work in close collaboration with software engineers working on integration of hardware, graphical interfaces, data processing and metadata collection and web portals. You will interact with scientists and users to automate their needs during experimental sessions.

Your missions will be the following:

  • integrate and automate hardware devices in the beamline control system
  • automate data processing and data publication
  • provide graphical tools for experiment configuration and data visualization
  • train users in the use of these tools.

Expected profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification totalling 300 ECTS) in Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant professional experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Python.
  • Solid understanding of metadata concepts and common data formats.
  • Experience in developing desktop and web-based graphical applications is a plus.
  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment.
  • Interest in scientific research is considered an asset.
  • Professional proficiency in English (working language at ESRF).
