Engineer in the Radio Frequency group

Context & Job description

The Accelerator and Source Division (ASD) operates an accelerator complex with a 6 GeV electron storage ring, which is the source of the X-rays that are exploited on the experimental stations. In 2020, the ESRF has commissioned a new ultra-low emittance ring that constitutes the world’s first Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) of hard X-rays. As part of the ASD, the Radio Frequency (RF) group is responsible for the 200 MeV Pre-Injector Linac, the 352 MHz accelerating RF cavities of the booster and the storage ring with their high power RF transmitters, as well as the pulsed magnets and power supplies of the beam injection/extraction systems. The RF group comprises five units with a total of 16 collaborators.

As an engineer in the RF group, within the RF power amplifiers unit, your main tasks will be to :

  • Participate in the operation, maintenance, monitoring and upgrading of RF power amplifiers to ensure safe and reliable operation of the accelerator complex.
  • Taking an active part in current projects: replacement of the 1.1 MW klystron transmitters with ten 110 kW solid-state amplifiers, implementation of 1.4 GHz solid-state amplifiers for the new 4th harmonic RF system for cluster extension.
  • RF characterization and tuning of passive components using a vector network analyzer
  • RF design, prototyping, characterization and optimization of active RF components, in particular RF amplifier boards.
  • Actively participate in technical and scientific exchanges and collaborations at a global level within the accelerator community.

In addition, as a member of the Accelerator and Source division, you will be required to contribute 15% of your time to the operation of the accelerator complex as part of the shift work for the user service and take part in the RF standby duty.

Expected profile

  • Higher university degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering with a specialization in Radio Frequency and/or Microwave technology, Master of equivalent (300 ECTS diploma)
  • Minimum 5 years' professional experience in high power RF engineering
  • Master microwave concepts like S-parameters, waveguides and their modes, resonators and their modes, circulators, gain, efficiency, coupling, directivity, frequency/time domain,...
  • Ability to carry out measurements, diagnostics and calibrations on complex low and high power RF equipment, using vector network analyzers, RF power meters, spectrum analyzers,...
  • Ability to draw up technical specifications, scientific reports and make oral presentations in English (working language at the ESRF)
  • Sound teamwork capability

Working conditions

Permanent position. Participation in shift work according to the ESRF regulations.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
