Postdoctoral Fellow at the nanodiffraction imaging beamline ID01 in the X-ray Nanoprobe group

Context & Job description

ID01 is a beamline that delivers sub-micron sized x-ray beams and aims to exploit the capabilities of local diffraction, coherent diffraction and full field microscopy techniques. These methods can generally be described as strain microscopy with differing fields of view and resolutions. ID01 is competitive over a wide energy regime reaching from 7 to 35 keV and can accommodate sample environments while routinely offering beamsizes down to 30 nm. As one of the world-leading facilities in the exploitation of coherent nanobeams we are also actively working on algorithms used in the analysis of coherent scattering patterns. In collaboration with the ESRF sample environment group and local collaborators, we are also developing sample environments for the specific needs of nano-beam diffraction.

You will develop your own research project in collaboration with the ID01 team and its scientific collaborators, bring in your own field of expertise and creativity and join the groups research effort as a collaborator and contributor. Your technical focus will be on the exploitation and development of scanning diffraction microscopy with applications ranging from highly strained semiconductors to single particles in battery cathodes

Exploiting these unique capacities, you will participate in beamline operation, assisting scientists from our international user community for the preparation of their experiments.

Further information may be obtained from T. Schülli (tel.: +33 (0)4 76 88 22 80, email: schulli@esrf.fr).

Expected profile

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, material science, or closely related science obtained less than 3 years ago
  • A strong background in x-ray diffraction would be desirable
  • Team player, ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Data science related skills appreciated, python is an advantage
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Working conditions

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 or 18-month period.
