Mechanical Engineer for Scientific Instrumentation F/M

Context & Job description

You will join on a time limited (COD) position a team of engineers and technicians in charge of developing new mechanical equipment for the experimental stations within the Mechanical Engineer Group in ESRF Instrumentation Services and Development Division (ISDD).

Programme and work in close collaboration with engineers experienced in mechanical engineering applied to scientific instruments.

Your main mission will be to contribute to the design and installation of the equipments for a new beamline dedicated to nano-tomography.
In this context, your activities and responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Carry out feasibility studies and mechanical design studies using computer-assisted tools for components of the experimental lines (general layout, high stability supports, opto-mechanical devices, motorised mechanical systems, etc.) involving precision, stability, vacuum and cooling technologies
  • Participate in engineering calculations
  • Supervise the production of detailed mechanical drawings, and coordinate the procurement, manufacturing, test and installation phases
  • Follow up the installation of major mechanical equipment, in close collaboration with ESRF services such as infrastructure, electronic, vacuum, alignment, mechanical assembly teams

Expected profile

  • You should hold a higher university degree (Master or equivalent 300 ECTS diploma) in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience, with skills in drafting, mechanical design and engineering calculations
  • Use of mechanical design CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)
  • Strong interest in scientific instrumentation, and experience in procurement, manufacturing, follow-up and project management would be key assets
  • Autonomous, well-organised, team-oriented and a hands-on mindset are essential
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Working conditions

Time limited contract of 36 months maximum.

The salary will be calculated based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.
